Gifting Pets at the Holidays

For many parents, your kids have been asking for a pet all year.  What better time than the holidays to surprise them with that sweet puppy or kitten popping out of a basket? Gifting any animal seems like the ultimate holiday present. However, many times, the impulse purchase ends up being taken back when the excitement wears off. There are a few steps you can take to ensure you choose the right pet that will be part of your family for many years to come.

Talk to Your Family and Plan

Adding a pet into a family, at any time of the year, is a big decision. There are a few factors to consider. Adopting or purchasing a pet should always include a family conversation. While you may want to surprise the recipient, be sure to include others in your plan.

When purchasing or adopting a pet that requires more attention (puppies and kittens) in their early years, ensure someone is available to care for them. After the holiday, when everyone goes back to work and school, and the pet is alone all day, they may get into trouble. This scenario causes pets to be returned. Devise a plan for the pets’ long-term care before you bring them home.

The pet you choose should fit into your current lifestyle. Making major changes to your regular routine, even if they are temporary while the pet is young, can also cause them to be returned. For example – do you have time and the desire to walk a puppy every day all winter to ensure they get the exercise they need? Remember, shelters have more than cats and dogs for adoption. Many also have small animals such as rabbits, birds and reptiles available!

Ask other pet owners about their experience with the animal you are considering. Regardless of the type of pet you are contemplating take time to talk to the breeder, shelter and even a veterinarian about the care, expense and commitment the pet requires. Lastly, do some research online prior to your purchase or adoption. There are many great resources for you to tap into that are a few clicks away. Investigate the animals’ particular needs and constrictions including, diet, suitable living environment and their individual temperament. Taking the time to do this will ensure you are well prepared for the requirements needed to care for your new pet and will help lessen the possibility of returning them after the holiday.

Consider the Recipient

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) recommends giving pets as gifts only to individuals who have expressed interest and can responsibly care for the pet. Gifting a pet to a small child can be exciting, however, many times, parents end up taking care of the new family pet. If the intention is to teach the child to be responsible, talk to other family members to determine if the child is old enough and has the time to properly manage the pet.

While nothing can compare to giving the animal itself as a gift, giving the recipient a gift card to a shelter to pick out the pet of their dreams – after the holiday – may be the better direction. Many times, if the recipient plays a part in choosing the pet, there is less chance of them being returned.

Consider the Pet

There are many types of pets to choose from – cats, dogs, rabbits, reptiles and birds. If you are unsure of what pet you want to adopt, be sure to read our Learning Center article: Choosing the Right Pet for Your Family. Most shelters are bursting with animals that need a home. If you have not settled on a particular pet or breed, visit your local shelter or rescue center for some ideas. Talk to them about your family and lifestyle, they can help you pick a great addition for your family.

Remember, the holidays are a busy time in most homes. The pet may be overwhelmed with the excitement of family and friends visiting. Some animals may need time to decompress in a quiet room or crate during the hustle of the holidays. Be sure to give them the space and time they need to acclimate to their new home.

While the pet is the ultimate present, don’t forget supplies to care for them. Get the basics well before the holiday, Ensure you are ready with a leash, collar, bowls, toys, food, treats and a bed, hutch, habitat or crate.

Adding a pet to a family can be a great idea and will add years of joy to your home. Be sure to consider the points listed before you adopt to ensure your new pet is the right fit for your family and his lifetime.
