Three Easy Steps to Litter Training

Litter training a kitten or cat doesn’t have to be a daunting task. It is well worth your time if you are patient and persistent. Cats have a natural instinct to bury and dig, so rest assured, they will catch on. Follow these steps to ensure success.

Step 1: Choosing Supplies

This is one of the most important steps in your success. First, choose a litter box that is the right size for your kitten or cat and one they can grow into. The litter box should be about 2 times the size of your cat. If you are training a kitten, choose a bigger litter box to accommodate his growth. Next, decide what kind of litter you will use. Some litters clump easily which makes cleaning up simple. Other natural options such as recycled paper or wood lessen the mess but are more time consuming to clean. Ultimately you will want to use the litter your cat prefers.  Whichever litter you choose, be sure to clean it often for success. If you have more than one cat, you should have a litter box for each of them. Lastly, consider placing the litter box in a location that makes it easy and convenient to use.

HELPFUL TIP: Many cat owners are opting to place the litter box in an enclosed pet house that doubles as an end table or coffee table. This can be a beautiful addition to your décor while adding the privacy your cat desires. It is important to choose a product made of a composite material to ensure resistance to moisture, warping, cracking and splitting. This also allows for easy clean up as urine doesn’t soak in – simply rinse or wipe off.  Some of these stylish products can even accommodate a self-cleaning litter box!

Step 2: Be Positive Through Motivation

Introduce your kitten or cat to their litter box by placing them in it after meals and naps until he gets used to it. When training a kitten, it is also important to restrict their space, so they learn to relieve themselves in the litter. Treats will motivate your cat. After he uses the litter box be sure to reward his good behavior! Don’t yell at your cat if he has an accident, this will add to his frustration, making litter training difficult. After your cat is regularly using his litter box, cut back on the treats. You do not want an unhealthy cat! Instead, tell him what a good cat he is through praise and cuddles.

Step 3: Remain Patient

Training a cat to use his litter can take a little time, so don’t give up! If you stick to these steps your cat will be successful. However, if you do run into problems, check with your vet to ensure your cat is in good health. Many vets will recommend cats be spayed or neutered to decrease the chance of accidents around the house. If everything checks out for your cat, consider some other trouble shooting techniques such as changing the type of litter or cleaning it more often. It is even possible he doesn’t like the litter box location or the type of litter you chose. Try other options if you think this may be the cause.

Your cat is smart and can learn easily. Stick with these steps and your cat will be used to his new routine in no time!
