Halloween Safety: Keeping Your Dog Safe Around Treats

Halloween Safety: Keeping Your Dog Safe Around Treats

Halloween is all about costumes, candy, and spooky fun—but for our dogs, it can also bring a few unexpected dangers. Between overflowing candy bowls, dropped chocolate bars, and sugary wrappers left behind, this holiday is a temptation-filled minefield for curious pups. Here are a few simple tricks to keep your dog safe while you enjoy your treats.

1. Keep Candy Out of Paw’s Reach

Chocolate, sugar-free gum (xylitol), and many candies can be toxic to dogs. Store candy bowls on high counters or in closed containers, and remind little ghouls and goblins to keep their trick-or-treat stash safely tucked away.

2. Watch Out for Wrappers

Shiny wrappers may look like toys, but if swallowed, they can cause stomach upset or even blockages. Keep trash cans covered and clean up candy debris right away.

3. Treat Them with Dog-Safe Goodies

Don’t let your pup feel left out! Stock up on dog-safe treats or whip up some pumpkin-based dog biscuits so they can join the fun without risk.

4. Be Ready for Emergencies

If your dog does sneak a bite of something they shouldn’t, know the signs of trouble: vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, or lethargy. Keep your vet’s number (and an emergency vet clinic) handy—just in case.

5. Distraction is Key

During trick-or-treat chaos, keep your dog busy with a chew toy or a stuffed food puzzle. It’ll help them avoid scavenging while you’re busy greeting costumed guests.

🎃With a little extra care, your Halloween can be safe and fun for the whole family—including your four-legged friend!
